Which wedding cake flavours will you choose?
/Choosing your wedding cake flavours can be a tough choice but it’s definitely one of the more fun decisions you’ll be making in the run up to your big day. I mean, you get to eat cake!
I actually really love it when I make the decision hard for my couples. It means they enjoyed them all. I love it even more when I change someone’s mind - I often hear someone say that they were intent on a Victoria Sponge for all tiers but they now want different flavours per tier after tasting my cakes (and even more so when they add another tier or cutting cake to squeeze in another flavour - it happens!).
I’m super proud of my cake menu, which I’ve been developing over the last few years. There are some absolute best-sellers (oh hi there Red Velvet), crowd pleasers (Victoria Sponge is a classic for a reason) and some different options you may not have tried before. I haven’t introduced any new flavours recently but it’s something I’m going to be doing in 2025. Watch this space!
For now, let me guide you through my cake menu and see if I can tempt you…
Caked’s signature flavours
Not to blow my own whistle here but these are the flavours that I’m known for. The ones I get asked to make by my friends and family. I’m heavily influenced by American cakes so they’re a little different to your traditional English cakes.
Red Velvet - this is a my all time best-selling flavour. It’s dramatic to cut and looks great sliced and served (see above). I struggle to describe the taste, it’s more of a delicious texture. Lots of people who claim to be unbothered by Red Velvet are won over by this one.
Chocolate Oreo - and all of my chocolate cakes (Classic Chocolate, Salted Caramel, Chocolate Hazelnut, Black Forest). This is a super fudgy mud cake, almost like a brownie consistency. It’s a great option if you’re serving your cake as dessert.
Classic flavours
One of my bugbears is when someone orders a cake and says they’d like “just a Victoria Sponge.” It’s a classic for a reason and that reason is that vanilla is delicious and the combination of vanilla sponge, vanilla buttercream and raspberry jam is even more delicious. Plus, it makes your grandma happy.
Victoria Sponge - you know everyone will love this classic.
White Chocolate & Raspberry - this is my personal favourite sponge because for some reason, the addition of white chocolate makes it super light and fluffy. I fold fresh raspberries through my white chocolate buttercream, creating a beautiful pink striped effect when cut.
Carrot - with or without walnuts, with or without raisins. However you prefer your carrot cake and filled with my white chocolate buttercream.
Coffee - a delicious combination of light coffee sponge and decadent coffee buttercream.
Traditional Fruit Cake - not as popular as my sponge cake flavours but I love making these! Made with an array of dried fruit and laced with brandy, this really will make your grandma happy.
A slight twist
These are flavours that are well known but with a slight twist to get your guests talking.
Lemon & Lavender - who doesn’t love lemon cake? The lavender note is super subtle and adds a slight floral hint.
Orange & Elderflower - I love orange, it’s such a magical fruit. Paired with elderflower, it makes a beautiful summery flavour.
Strawberry Prosecco - I describe this as a pimped up Victoria Sponge. It’s the perfect celebratory cake flavour!
Something a bit different
Flavours that you might not see everywhere. These will spark conversation with your guests.
Spiced Apple Chai - with my studio based in Dorset, I had to include an ode to Dorset Apple Cake on my menu! This one is delicately spiced with chai flavours of nutmeg, ginger and cinnamon.
Cherry Bakewell - my Dad’s favourite. The delicious combination of almonds and black cherry, it’s a cherry Bakewell tart in cake form.
Banoffee - a fluffy banana sponge with a filling of salted caramel buttercream. Another great option if you’re planning to serve your cake as dessert.
As part of your wedding cake consultation, you’ll receive 5x cake flavours to try. I’ll always try to include a range of the different style of cake I offer but if you have preferences, let me know and I’ll try my best to include them. It’s best to open to a few flavours you may not have considered though!
If you’re struggling to choose after your tasting, don’t despair. You’re welcome to order a second box to refine your choices (and some couples order another box anyway just to have some more cake!). Plus there’s no pressure to rush your decision - I ask for cake flavours to be confirmed 4 weeks before your big day.
So what’s your favourite flavour? Or what would you like to see on the menu? Let me know!
